FAQs Patent Questions

Question:How do I obtain the status of a patent?

Answer:
The Patent Application Information Retrieval (PAIR) system permits third parties to obtain information about applications that have been published pursuant to 35 U.S.C. 122(b) and issued patents, such as the status of maintenance fee payments and whether or not a reissue application or reexamination request has been filed. PAIR can be accessed on the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) web site at http://portal.uspto.gov/external/portal/pair.

Question:How long does it take for a patent application to be processed?

Answer:
The average patent application pendency is 24.6 months. Applications received in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office are numbered in sequential order and the applicant will be informed within eight weeks of the application number and official filing date if filed in paper. If filed electronically, the application number is available within minutes.

Question:What's a land patent?

Answer:
Land patents document the transfer of land ownership from the federal government to individuals. Our land patent records include the information recorded when ownership was transferred.
